In January 2016, my small team and I returned to Lesvos – my third trip there in as many months – to continue our coverage of the ongoing refugee crisis. There we met Syrian refugee, Hasan Ataya, who had been smuggled to Greece from Turkey by boat in June 2015. Unlike most refugees who remain on the island for a maximum of three days, Ataya stayed on the island where he opened a Halal Syrian restaurant in Mytilini, the capital of Lesvos, with the help of a Greek partner, Thomaniku Alqis. Together, they created Damas – short for Damascus – where refugees could experience ‘a taste of home’ before moving on to the next step in their journeys.
